Professional Rod & Bar Aluminum: Standard Aluminum Extrusion

standard aluminum extrusionYou can purchase traditional aluminum frames and standard aluminum extrusion at just about any home improvement store or industrial supply center. Rod and bar aluminum are used for professional construction job sites and consumer DIY projects regularly. Much of this type of extrusion is cheap, quickly made, and not very consistent. You likely won’t ever know what facility or manufacturer is making these materials, the recipe that was used for extrusion or have any idea what their track record is for reliability. For some projects, this might be okay. However, when your reputation rides on the quality of the materials that you use, it is much better to directly outsource the production of your standard extrusion and fabrication to a professional provider.

Custom and Standard Aluminum Extrusion

While we have earned a solid reputation in the industry for our custom extrusion solutions, we also do a lot of standard profiles, including rod and bar aluminum. Traditional aluminum frames can be used in a lot of manufacturing, both for industry products and consumer goods. Extrusion and fabrication are something that we know a lot about, and you can use that to your advantage. Our team of highly trained and experienced engineers and technicians can help you maximize the return on your investment and get results that meet all of your standards for quality, budget, and lead times.

At Silver City Aluminum, we have a wide variety of clients who work within many diverse industries that require a wide range of custom and standard aluminum extrusion. Simple, standard extrusions can be used in many different ways in conjunction with custom solutions or as a stand-alone material for a specific project. Some of the standard shapes we offer include bars, tubes, and angles. Tubes can be circular or square, hollow or solid, depending on the needs of the client. We have a large selection of stock profiles that can be ordered from our Stock Profile Catalog. Make sure to speak with one of our technicians if this sounds appealing to you and would work with your requirements.

Selecting the Best Alloy

In addition to picking the right shape or profile for your standard aluminum extrusion, you will also want to discuss your needs with our team concerning the alloy that will be used. What might be required for a construction project that relies on traditional aluminum frames will be quite different than the demands for something created to be used in the aerospace or marine industries. The mechanical properties of each alloy can offer different strengths and abilities that might make your rod and bar aluminum even more valuable. We work primarily in the 6000-series of aluminum alloy for all extrusion and fabrication. If you require something different, speak with one of our engineers about your specific needs.

  • 6005-Series Aluminum – Alloyed with manganese and silicon, our clients who choose the 6005-series aluminum alloy are looking for a thickness that goes up through 0.500 for T1 and ranges from 0.124 to 0.500 for T5 temper. Perfect for creating a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and material grades, this alloy can be heat treated to improve strength and is excellent for bars, sheets, and custom extrusion and fabrication.
  • 6063-Series Aluminum – Frequently referred to in the industry as an architectural alloy, this option is perfect for intricate extrusions. Well-suited to both extrusion and fabrication for secondary operations, this alloy features high resistance to corrosion. A wide range of tempers are available in the 6063-series, including T1, T5, T52, T6, T62, and O, with thickness options ranging from 0.124 up through 1.000, depending on your needs. Excellent for traditional aluminum frames in windows and doors, as well as many other projects that require an aesthetically pleasing finish.
  • 6463-Series Aluminum – Related and similar to 6063-series aluminum, the 6463-series is also often used in architectural applications and meets ASTM standard specifications for extruded bars, rods, wire, profiles, and tubes. Choose from tempers that include T1, T4, T5, T6, and T62 with thickness options that go up through 0.500 with the 6463-Series aluminum. This particular alloy is only formed using extrusion and can be heat-treated to produce tempers with higher strength and lower ductility.
